The guy behind That History Guy

I’m Carl, and for nearly two decades, my life has been dedicated to the Suffolk landscape as the owner of Woodfarm Barns (a private collection of romantic, dog-friendly barns, cottages, and moored Dutch barges in Suffolk, plus a hillside retreat in Tuscany).

I initially started filming local history, folklore, and ghostly tales for a purely commercial reason: to give my holiday guests a reason to choose my cottages over a faceless hotel, and to share the true soul of the region.

What started as a unique marketing strategy for my business quickly exploded into a massive community of history enthusiasts. Now, whether I’m digging into legends of the Black Shuck or whispering marshes, my mission is to give you a real, deep connection to the history around us.

I’m the guy behind the scripts, behind the camera, in front of the camera, and in the vast state of the art editing suite (my laptop).

Life has a funny way of shifting gears. For most of my life, my creative outlet was writing and playing music in bands. When osteoarthritis in my hands forced me to put down my guitars, I lost that creative spark. Digging into Suffolk’s legends, from long gone monks, to ancient ruins and whispers in the marshes, this unexpectedly became the songwriting outlet I had been missing. I traded the guitar for the camera, songwriting for scripts, and short videos for recording my songs.

Today, this site is a hub for Suffolk (and Tuscan) folklore, history, and ghost stories. Whether you are staying at one of my holiday barns or just love a good tale, I’m here to bring these legends to life, spark your curiosity, and make sure these incredible stories aren’t forgotten.

What do I cover?
